What is Botox?

The word Botox is short for Botulinum Toxin, which is used in the field of cosmetic enhancement to get rid of facial lines and wrinkles, it can also be used as part of medical treatment for conditions that affect nerves and muscle control. When Botox is mentioned, most people will probably imagine tiny needles injecting the toxin into the face, which is designed to get rid of signs of aging by essentially freezing the muscles underneath the skin, this pulls the skin taut and reduces the appearance of lines. Treatments like this are consistently popular with both males and females, particularly those who are part of the entertainment industry, and are expected to maintain a certain standard of beauty. Botox has been proven to be much more successful than faces masks or creams, when it comes to facial lines, but it is not a permanent solution to aging, as it wears off after three or four months – depending on how often the patient returns to the clinic for treatment.

The toxin itself is made up of protein taken from the Botulinum bacteria, which is very dangerous if used incorrectly; this is why it is administered in tiny doses and should only be used by trained professionals.

Can it get rid of deep lines and wrinkles?

Temporarily, Botox can reduce the look of deep frown lines, or crow’s feet that crinkle at the edge of the eyes when you smile, it’s also useful for heavy nasolabial folds – the lines that run between the nose and the corners of the mouth, which become more pronounced as we age. Obvious lines can really alter the texture and shape of the face, which can have a significant effect on self-confidence, especially if you appear older than your biological age. Facial lines can develop without you really noticing; perhaps you have a particularly stressful job, you’re always busy with children and family, or you’re just genetically predisposed to deep wrinkles, whatever the cause, Botox can be highly effective with all kinds of lines, and it generally doesn’t require any anaesthetic, as the needle is so small. Remember, Botox is not a permanent treatment, but with regular, appropriate use, it can help you look refreshed and feel younger.

Does Botox hurt?

We’ve all got different pain thresholds; some people would consider Botox to be virtually painless, whilst others might be much more susceptible to mild discomfort. The needles used are so tiny that they don’t cause too much pain, but if you’re still worried about it, you should talk to your provider and ask about anaesthetic techniques, such as numbing cream. However, the majority of patients would probably agree that the pain is not something to panic about, and even if you do find it uncomfortable, it will only last for a few seconds each time.

The area where you are likely to feel slightly more pain is around the lips, simply because they are thinner and more sensitive than the skin on the rest of the face, but if you can grit your teeth and bare it, you really will notice the difference. You could always think about asking a friend or family member to accompany you for moral support.

After the treatment, you might notice some slight swelling in your face, and possibly some minimal bruising around the injection sites; this is not normally obvious and will disappear in a short time. You should be aware there are other side effects associated with Botox, but they are mild and temporary, more often than not; look out for drooping eyelids, inflammation, localised pain, tenderness, and nausea. These shouldn’t merit any great concern, but if you feel that your condition is deteriorating to worrying degree, you can always return to the clinic for assistance or go to the hospital if you feel it is necessary.

How do I get the results I’m looking for?

The full effect of Botox injections will become apparent after a few days, but you will see some improvement almost immediately after your treatment. The ideal appearance is natural and refreshed, rather than frozen and expressionless. Botox reduces the muscle activity to make lines look less pronounced, but, when used in the correct quantities, it shouldn’t render you incapable of forming expressions. A lot of patients are justifiably concerned about this outcome – no doubt because of celebrities who have overdone it with the Botox needle – and it is a legitimate worry; to avoid the frozen look, the toxin has to be used in moderation, by a skilled professional. You might think just anyone can pick up a needle and start administering age-defying treatments, but it takes a certain amount of artistry to provide a subtle, natural finish.

The best way to make sure are in the safest hands is to do some background checks on the clinics you are considering; are they certified and insured to carry out such procedures? Do they have proof that their staff are all qualified? Can they provide you with evidence of previous patients they have treated? Have any of your friends or family members experienced their services? Take a look around the surgery before you sign up for anything, see if you feel comfortable in the environment, and don’t feel pushed into handing over any money. You should talk through your expectations with the surgeon before going ahead, just to make sure you’re on the same page as far as results go.

Furthermore, don’t be tempted to make an appointment based on price discounts or money off coupons, this kind of cost incentive usually comes with hidden extras or unpleasant results. That’s not to say that you have to pay through the nose for Botox injections, just be aware that there are unscrupulous people out there who are just looking to take your money, and have no regard for your health or appearance. The Pearl Dental Clinic employs highly trained staff, that are certified and experienced with this type of cosmetic enhancement; give them a call today to arrange a consultation or just to enquire about any of the treatments available.
